Gary L. Carr, a vibrant 86-year-old from Janesville, passed away on June 18, 2024, surrounded by his adoring family. His memory will continue to inspire us, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were touched by his remarkable presence. He was born June 1, 1938, in Peoria, Illinois, the son of the late William and Marjorie (Rose) Carr. Gary married Phyllis Kressin on October 2, 2004, in Rochester, Wisconsin. Gary earned his engineering degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. He worked for United Technologies and Falk Corporation for 42 years.

Born March 29, 1954, in Owosso, Gary was the beloved son of Roy and Isabell (Martin) Carr. On March 17, 1973, he married the love of his life, Charlotte Gutting, with whom he shared more than five decades of love, laughter, and adventure. Gary was a man of talent and passion.

He found joy in snowmobiling, team roping, woodworking, and the outdoors, where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. His heart was always complete as he spent time in Florida after his retirement, working the land and sharing a treat with his loved ones.

Gary was known for his playful spirit. He often had fun hunting snipe with the children and made everyone laugh with his jokes. Gary was a hard-working man, a loyal “jack of all trades,” and was often called “MacGyver” for his ingenuity and skill. He spent 36 years of his life as a truck driver, retiring in 2014.

Gary was passionate about camping, fishing, boating, lending a helping hand, exploring new places, and dancing the night away. Gary had a great sense of humor and loved to tell stories. Gary served on the board of Afton Community Church, volunteered at Gift’s Men’s Shelter and the Salvation Army, and volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America.

We are thrilled to share that Gary is lovingly survived by his devoted wife, Phyllis Carr. His legacy lives on through his cherished children: Mark (Mary) Carr of Knoxville, TN, Marcia (David) Brown of Greenfield, WI, Peggy (David) Baumeister of Burlington, WI, Margie (Pete) Giese of Delavan, WI, Michelle Martinez of Burlington, WI, Dana Wrich of MN, Brett Steinmann of Elkhorn, WI, William “Bill” (Jenny) Steinmann of Burlington, WI, and Dawn (Jamie) DeBoer of Racine, WI.

To add to this wonderful family, he is also survived by 24 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Gary’s loving memory also lives on through his dear brothers, Steve (Cheryl) Carr and Stan (Sue) Carr, his sister, Peggy Jo (Richard) Shafer, as well as many adoring nieces and nephews. Gary’s love and spirit continue to shine through the lives of those he touched.

Gary’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his devoted wife Char, his beloved children Dawn (Russ) Cords and Deanna (Brandy) Carr-West, and his adoring grandchildren Kayla (Kyle) Criscenzo, Taylor Hewitt (Christian Bandelow), Buddy Douglas (Katy Faynor) and Ryan Schnüre. He is also joyfully survived by his beloved brothers Keith (Rose) Carr, Larry (Diane) Carr, and his dear sister Karen (Frank) Vavricka!

Gary was preceded in death by his dearly loved parents, Roy and Isabell Carr. Gary will be missed by all who knew him, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 24, 2024, at 12 Noon at APPEL WOLFE FUNERAL HOME, Janesville, with Rev. Phil Ramsey officiating. Visiting hours start at 10:30 on Monday and continue until the service. Memorials to the Salvation Army or Gift’s Men’s Shelter would be appreciated.

Carr began his training at the National Youth Music Theater of Great Britain, taught at the Arts Educational Schools from 2003 to 2005 and taught at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art from 2005 to 2008 on a Leverhulme Trust scholarship.

After graduating from LAMDA in July 2008, he embarked on an exciting journey, showcasing his talent in captivating television productions for the renowned BBC and ITV. Notably, he contributed his artistry to the esteemed Royal National Theater production of “Dido, Queen of Carthage,” a remarkable play by Christopher Marlowe, under the direction of the brilliant James MacDonald.

From 2011 to 2014, he starred in the BBC television series Death in Paradise as police officer Fidel Best. He played the charismatic pimp C.C. in the American television series The Deuce in 2017 and 2018, with a guest appearance in the third and final series in 2019. He is also known for his role as American jazz singer Jack Ross in series 4 of the ITV historical drama Downton Abbey broadcast in 2013.

His theater credits include “Yerma” and “Macbeth.” In November 2009, he starred in the Royal National Theatre’s stage production of the Terry Pratchett novel Nation, adapted by Mark Ravenhill and directed by Melly Still.
