James W. “Jim” “Nick” Nykodym, son of Gilbert, Sr., and Edna (Boldt) Nykodym, was born May 12, 1944, in Norfolk, Nebraska. Jim graduated from Norfolk High School, attended Norfolk Junior College, and received a Bachelor of Arts in Science Education from the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
He later earned a master’s degree from Wayne State College. Jim taught science and coached in Elkhorn Valley Schools for 38 years.
In 1978, Jim graduated from Wausau East High School and worked several jobs before discovering his passion in life working for American Family Insurance. He opened his first office in Marshfield and moved his office to the Wausau area in 1986. Jim quickly became American Family Insurance’s top agent and maintained that status for many years.
His passion for helping people knew no bounds. Jim always had a big heart and always helped people by making sure they had clothes on their bodies and food on the table. During his business career and after his retirement, Jim worked with and supported many charitable organizations. He was involved in too many charities. Still, he influenced a few, such as Children’s Hospital of Madison, The Neighbors Place, Friends of Wausau, Bridge Street Mission, Empowered Dream Hunt, and the Marathon County Humane Society.
In addition to helping people, Jim enjoys many other activities, including billiards, golf, auto racing, softball and scooters, and racing. Every November brought out one of Jim’s true passions: deer hunting. It was nine days of camaraderie with his friends, hunting, spending time in the hunting lodge, horseback riding, and what he really enjoyed, trailing deer. There was also some time at the inn.
Jim was blessed in many ways, but his singing voice was unforgettable. He shared his voice with many people and sang at weddings, funerals, church, and sometimes at karaoke.
A memorial Mass will be held for James “Jim” “Nick” Nykodym, 80, of Tilden, Nebraska, on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Tilden. Reef. John Norman will officiate and burial at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Tilden.
On August 14, 1971, Jim married Loretta Sullivan in Tilden, Nebraska. They were blessed with four children: Julie, Matt, Theresa and Anthony.
Jim was a member of the Cornhusker Two-Cylinder Club and enjoyed John Deere tractors. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, taught hunting classes, and enjoyed reloading ammunition. Jim mentored his teammates, a playful and proud grandfather, an avid ice cream eater, and a frequent visitor to The Branding Iron. He enjoyed keeping all the brats in line.

James served as a World War II veteran in the Armored Division of the Lord Strathcona Horse Regiment. He was a longtime resident of Welland and worked at Atlas Steels for most of his career. He enjoyed fishing at Round Lake and cheering on the Blue Jays and Raptors. He was a big NASCAR fan and often wore the number 24. He was also an avid visitor to the Seaway Mall, where he had many friends.
Jim was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1935 to William and Evelyn Nicholas. He grew up during the Great Depression and World War II and enlisted in the U.S. Army after high school. Jim served in the United States. Army Security Agency during the Korean War. After his service, he returned to Detroit, attended college on the G.I. Bill, and began a career in banking.
In the 1950s, he met and married his wife, Jean Nicholas (née English), a trained nurse working across the border in Windsor, Ontario. In the 1960s, Jim and Jean had their son Brian and daughter Anne.
No one could have asked for better parents. In 1971, Jim and Jean packed up and fled the crumbling city of Detroit to settle their family here in Calais. Jim worked for Calais Federal Savings and Loan (now Camden Bank on Main Street), and Jean began as a nurse for Calais Regional Hospital. He continued to work for Calais Federal Savings until his retirement.
Jim was very social and socially engaged. He coached Little League Baseball, a sport he greatly enjoyed, and served on the Calais City Council and the Calais School Board. He was also active in the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Jim was also active in local charities.
Following James’ wishes, the funeral service will be held simply and in a COVID-19-safe manner. A viewing will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2021, at J.J. Possible Patterson and Sons Funeral Residence (19 Young Street, Welland, Ontario 647-493-2829) from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Following provincial COVID-19 regulations, proof of full vaccination, government-issued ID, and masks must be worn when walking into the funeral home.
An outdoor legion and graveside service will be held on Friday, December 31, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery in Welland (southeast corner of Niagara Street and Woodlawn Road). Social distancing and face masks must be worn during the service. Instead of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
Jim and Jean had a very long and happy retirement together. After selling their dream home at Mill Cove in Robbinston, they lived a simpler lifestyle and moved into an apartment with Calais Methodist Homes. He and Jean were the center of his family. On holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, or just any day, they received their children, grandchildren, and most recently, their great-grandchildren.
Until his death last Saturday, Jim was (at his insistence) the primary caregiver for his beloved wife, Jean, who had suffered from Alzheimer’s/dementia for several years. After several falls limited Jean’s mobility, Jim visited her regularly to spend time with her while she recovered at Marshall’s Healthcare in Machias.
Jim is survived by his wife, Jean; his son, Brian Nicholas of Calais; daughter Anne Bergin and son-in-law Don of Waite; his granddaughters Cindy of Calais/Baileyville and Holliann of Camp Pendleton, Calif., and her husband Kekoa and daughter Eleanor; and his grandson Donny and husband Tony of Portland, Maine.
In honor of his wishes, funeral arrangements will be made privately with his family.
